Wheelchair Lifts

Wheelchair lifts — also called vertical platform lifts, or VPLs — are a cost-effective accessibility solution for scooter and wheelchair users challenged by steps and entryways. Altamira installs Bruno vertical platform lifts, which work like a mini elevator: a smooth, stable ride between levels with up to 14 feet of vertical travel and a 750 lb (340 kg) rated load capacity. Designed to the ASME A18.1 safety standard and available in battery-powered models that keep running during a power outage, a VPL makes your home or business entrance accessible without the long footprint of a ramp.

Key Features of Our Vertical Platform Lifts

Smooth, Barrier-Free Mobility

Effortlessly travel between levels with direct, vertical access—perfect for porches, decks, garages, or multi-story interiors. An automatic folding ramp lowers for smooth roll-on boarding, then folds up as a safety barrier while the lift is in motion.

Compact, Space-Saving Design

Unlike ramps, VPLs provide vertical lift in tight areas, preserving valuable space at residential or commercial entrances.

Built for Outdoor Duty

Bruno VPLs come standard with all-weather protected controls and switches for outdoor installations. For harsh winters, an optional cold-weather package with battery heater pads helps keep the lift ready to run in temperatures well below freezing.

Advanced Safety Features

  • Emergency stop switch on the platform control panel
  • Underside obstruction sensor that stops downward travel on contact
  • Top and bottom limit switches for precise, automatic stops at each landing
  • Gate interlocks that prevent movement while a gate is open
  • Keyed, constant-pressure controls to prevent unauthorized use

User-Friendly Operation

Simple rocker or paddle controls, optional landing call/send stations, and battery-powered models that continue to run for a period of time during a power outage—so you're not stranded when the lights go out.

Optional Upgrades & Customization

  • Platform sizes from 36" × 48" standard up to 42" × 60"
  • Platform and top-landing gate options with safety interlocks
  • Landing call/send stations with keyed controls
  • Straight-through or 90° exit configurations to fit your entryway
  • Cold-weather package for extreme winter conditions

Veterans: There May Be VA Support for This

We're an SBA-certified Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business that has served more than 25,000 Veterans. Start with the guide that matches your situation.

Important for wheelchair lifts: the HISA grant excludes porch lifts, so it won't pay for the lift itself. However, a medically necessary vertical platform lift may potentially be furnished through the VA's Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service when prescribed by a VA clinician and authorized. The VA makes all final eligibility and authorization decisions — we can help you understand the options and documentation.

Wheelchair Lift FAQs

7 questions answered

What is the weight capacity of a wheelchair lift?

The Bruno vertical platform lifts Altamira installs have a rated load capacity of 750 lbs (340 kg). That covers most power chairs and scooters with the rider aboard, but every installation starts with a free assessment so we can confirm the right fit for your equipment and your space.

Who do I contact if I have concerns about a wheelchair lift?

Contact Altamira directly. As an authorized Bruno dealer, we handle service, support, and warranty concerns for the lifts we install. Call 800-343-1066 and our team will help with any questions about your wheelchair lift.

How high can a vertical platform lift travel?

Bruno vertical platform lifts are available in models with up to 14 feet of vertical travel, making them a versatile elevator-like solution for homes and businesses with multiple levels or entryway steps. During your free assessment we measure your rise and recommend the right model height.

Can a wheelchair lift be installed outdoors?

Yes. Bruno vertical platform lifts come standard with all-weather protected controls and switches for outdoor use, and an optional cold-weather package helps keep the lift running in harsh winter conditions. Outdoor installations require a stable concrete base, which we evaluate during your free site assessment.

Are wheelchair lifts ADA-compliant?

The ADA generally applies to public and commercial buildings rather than private homes. Bruno vertical platform lifts are designed in accordance with the ASME A18.1 safety standard for platform lifts and can be used in most applications to meet ANSI A117.1 National Accessibility Guidelines. For business installations, Altamira configures each lift with the applicable accessibility, manufacturer, site, and local code requirements in mind.

What happens if the power goes out?

Battery-powered Bruno lifts continue to operate for a period of time during a power outage—and if the unit can't travel up, it should still travel down to the lower level so you're not stranded. An optional emergency hand wheel is also available for manually lowering the platform.

What warranty comes with a wheelchair lift?

Bruno vertical platform lifts include Bruno's Gold Limited Warranty: 2 years on major components (motor, drive screw and nut, brake, pulleys, belt, and screw bearings) and 1 year on all parts, starting from the installation date. Because Altamira is an authorized Bruno dealer, your installation keeps that warranty fully valid.
