How a Stairlift Installation Works in New Jersey
From the first phone call to your first ride, here's what to expect — handled start to finish by our Edison team on Glendale Avenue.
Free In-Home Assessment
An Edison-based mobility specialist comes to your home, measures your staircase, checks clearance at the top and bottom landings, and helps you choose an appropriate stairlift and configuration. You'll receive a written quote with no cost or obligation for the assessment.
Scheduled In-Home VisitYour Rail Is Prepared
For a straight staircase, the rail is prepared and sized for your staircase. Curved stairlifts require a custom-built rail designed around the specific turns, landings, and configuration of your stairs, so curved systems generally require a longer lead time.
Lead Time Varies by LiftLocal Professional Installation
Our own certified technicians — not subcontractors — mount the stairlift rail to your stair treads rather than your walls, complete the installation, test the system, and make the necessary adjustments for your staircase and selected stairlift.
Timing Varies by Lift TypeTraining & Local Service
Before we leave, we walk you and your family through the controls, swivel seat, call/send remotes, charging, and normal operation. After installation, our Edison team is available for stairlift service and maintenance.
Installation Day & BeyondWays to Pay for a Stairlift in New Jersey
Depending on eligibility and your individual situation, VA benefits and financing may help with the cost of a stairlift. Other assistance programs may help with qualifying home accessibility modifications, depending on the program and approved services.
VA Benefits for Veterans
HISA does not cover stairlifts or stair glides. However, medically necessary stair-glide equipment may be furnished through VA Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service when prescribed and authorized, depending on the Veteran's medical need and eligibility. Other VA accessibility benefits may also apply in certain situations. As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, Altamira has served 25,000+ Veterans. Final eligibility and authorization are determined by the VA.
Monthly Financing
Financing is available for qualified buyers on eligible purchases, allowing you to spread the cost across monthly payments rather than paying the full amount up front. We'll review available financing options and terms with you as part of your quote.
New Jersey Programs & Other Sources
Depending on eligibility and authorization, NJ FamilyCare Managed Long Term Services and Supports (MLTSS) includes home modifications, and the Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving (JACC) program includes environmental accessibility adaptations for eligible participants. Whether a particular stairlift or modification qualifies depends on the program, participant's assessed needs, and authorization. Long-term care insurance or nonprofit assistance may provide additional options depending on the policy or program. Original Medicare generally does not cover stairlifts. Our complete funding guide reviews additional potential funding sources.
Eligibility, coverage, benefit amounts, financing terms, and authorization requirements vary by program and individual circumstances. Altamira can help identify potential options, but final determinations are made by the VA, insurer, financing provider, health plan, or administering agency. Want a ballpark figure first? Common Questions
New Jersey Stairlift Questions
How much does a stairlift cost in New Jersey?
Straight stairlifts typically run $3,000 to $7,000 installed, depending on the model, staircase, and selected options. Curved stairlifts typically run $10,000 to $18,000 because the rail is custom-built to match the turns and landings of your specific staircase. Outdoor models generally fall toward the higher end of the applicable range because they are designed for exterior use.
Every free in-home assessment includes a written quote, and financing is available for qualified buyers on eligible purchases. For a ballpark figure before you call, try our accessibility cost estimator.
Does Altamira install stairlifts in Edison and Middlesex County?
Yes. Our Edison office at 55 Glendale Avenue installs and services stairlifts throughout Middlesex, Union, Somerset, Essex, and Morris counties — including Edison, New Brunswick, Woodbridge, Piscataway, Metuchen, and Newark — with service also extending into parts of eastern Pennsylvania and the lower Hudson Valley.
Will a stairlift damage my staircase or walls?
Stairlift rails mount to the stair treads rather than the walls, so wall mounting is generally not required. The installation does require the rail brackets to be fastened securely to the stair treads. If the stairlift is later removed, small fastener holes may remain where the brackets were attached.
How long does installation take?
Installation time depends on the stairlift model and staircase. A typical straight stairlift can often be installed in approximately 2 to 4 hours once the equipment is ready. Curved stairlifts require a custom-built rail, so there is typically a longer lead time between measurement and installation. Our Edison team will explain the expected timeline for your specific stairlift during the assessment and quoting process.
How narrow can my staircase be?
There isn't one universal minimum staircase width that applies to every stairlift installation. The required clearance depends on the Bruno model, staircase layout, rail position, the user, nearby doors and landings, and the amount of open stair space needed for other people in the home. We measure the staircase and confirm the required clearances during your free in-home assessment.
Do stairlifts work during a power outage?
Yes. Bruno stairlifts use rechargeable batteries and charge from household electrical power while parked at their charging locations. If household power goes out, the stairlift can continue operating from its batteries while sufficient charge remains, allowing the lift to remain usable during many temporary outages.
Are stairlifts safe?
Yes, when properly installed and used as intended. Bruno stairlifts include safety features such as obstruction sensors, a seat belt, a locking swivel seat for safer entry and exit at the landing, and smooth start-and-stop operation. Our certified technicians also test the stairlift and show you how to operate it before completing the installation.
Can I get a stairlift for outdoor steps?
Yes. We install Bruno outdoor stairlifts designed specifically for exterior use, with weather-resistant components, marine-grade seating materials, and a protective cover. Bruno's current outdoor stairlift models are designed to operate in temperatures from 0°F to 125°F, making them suitable for New Jersey's changing seasonal conditions.
Can VA benefits pay for a stairlift?
Possibly. As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business that has served more than 25,000 veterans, Altamira is familiar with VA accessibility programs and can help you understand the process. Final eligibility, medical necessity, and authorization are determined by the VA.
Does Medicare or insurance cover a stairlift?
Original Medicare generally does not cover stairlifts. Depending on eligibility and authorization, NJ FamilyCare Managed Long Term Services and Supports (MLTSS) includes certain home modifications, and the Jersey Assistance for Community Caregiving (JACC) program also provides certain home-modification services for eligible participants. Long-term care insurance or other assistance programs may provide additional options depending on the policy or program. Our funding guide reviews additional potential funding sources.
Can a stairlift be moved or removed later?
Straight stairlifts can often be relocated, but the new staircase and installation must be evaluated for compatibility and additional rail, brackets, or other parts may be required. Curved stairlift rails are custom-built for a specific staircase and generally cannot be reused on a substantially different staircase.
A stairlift can also be professionally removed. Because the rail brackets are fastened to the stair treads, small fastener holes may remain after removal.
How long does a stairlift last, and does it need maintenance?
Stairlift service life varies based on the model, frequency of use, operating environment, battery condition, maintenance, and availability of replacement parts. Routine maintenance helps keep the stairlift operating properly and may include checking the rail and drive components, mounting hardware, safety sensors, charging system, and batteries. Our Edison technicians provide maintenance and repair for the stairlifts we install and can also service many units installed by other companies, subject to condition, parts availability, and serviceability.
